An advocate is commonly called Adv.
A chartered accountant is known as CA.
An engineer may use Er.
Many professions have titles, designations, or professional identities that reflect their work and qualifications.
But what about teachers?
What professional title represents the people who help create doctors, engineers, advocates, accountants, scientists, entrepreneurs, leaders—and countless other professionals?
That is a question worth asking this Teachers’ Day.
The Importance of Teachers Goes Far Beyond the Classroom
A teacher does much more than complete a syllabus or explain a lesson.
A teacher may be the person who teaches a child their first alphabet, their first words, and their first lessons.
But the real work begins beyond the textbook.
Teachers build confidence in children who are afraid to speak.
They encourage students who think they are not capable.
They correct mistakes without giving up on the person making them.
They recognize potential that a student may not yet see in themselves.
And sometimes, a teacher says just one sentence that a student remembers for the rest of their life.
A lesson may last forty minutes, but a teacher's influence can last a lifetime.
Teachers Help Shape Every Profession
Think about the professionals we admire.
Doctors who save lives.
Engineers who build and innovate.
Lawyers and advocates who fight for justice.
Scientists who discover new possibilities.
Entrepreneurs who create opportunities.
Leaders who influence society.
Behind many of these journeys stands someone who taught, guided, encouraged, corrected, and believed.
Before they earned their professional title, they were students.
And before they became professionals, they needed someone to teach them how to learn, how to think, how to persevere, and how to believe in themselves.
That someone was often a teacher.
A Teacher Is More Than a Job Title
A teacher can be a Guru, Mentor, Guide, Role Model, Nation Builder, and Future Maker.
Teachers don't simply transfer knowledge.
They help shape character.
They teach patience.
They teach discipline.
They teach responsibility.
They encourage curiosity.
They help children discover their strengths and face their weaknesses.
The Ministry of Education itself describes teachers as playing a pivotal role in nation-building, shaping minds, inspiring curiosity, moulding character, and guiding students to become responsible citizens.
That is why teaching is not simply a profession.
It is a responsibility that can influence generations.
So, Why Don’t Teachers Have One Universal Professional Prefix?
This question becomes even more interesting because teachers certainly have professional designations—such as Teacher, Professor, Assistant Professor, TGT, PGT, Principal, and others, depending on their role and institution.
But unlike some professions, there isn't one universally recognized professional prefix that every teacher can place before their name in India.
And perhaps that is why the conversation is worth having.
Should teachers have a professional title or prefix that recognizes their unique contribution?
There have even been initiatives suggesting “Tr.” as a possible prefix for teachers. But this should not be confused with an official, universally mandated title.
What Should We Call the People Who Shape Our Future?
Maybe the bigger question isn't simply:
“What title should a teacher have?”
Maybe we should ask:
“How much respect should a teacher receive?”
Because a title is only a word.
Respect is something deeper.
A title can appear before someone's name.
But a teacher's true recognition appears in the lives of their students.
Every time a former student succeeds…
Every time a child gains confidence…
Every time someone achieves a dream…
Every time a student remembers a teacher who believed in them…
that is part of a teacher's legacy.
Teachers Deserve Recognition
India celebrates Teachers’ Day every year on September 5, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
The National Teachers’ Awards also recognize outstanding teachers for their contribution to students and the quality of education.
But perhaps appreciation shouldn't belong to just one day.
Teachers deserve respect throughout the year.
Because the impact of a good teacher doesn't end when the school bell rings.
A teacher may teach hundreds of students, but the lessons they leave behind can travel through generations.
I was a teacher myself.
I am not working as a teacher at present, but when I was teaching, I often wondered:
“Why don't teachers have a professional title of their own?”
The more I think about it, the more I realize that this question is not really about adding a word before a teacher's name.
It is about recognizing the importance of the profession.
It is about remembering that every successful professional once sat in a classroom.
Every expert was once a beginner.
Every confident speaker once had to learn their first words.
Every dreamer needed someone to encourage their dream.
And somewhere at the beginning of that journey, there was a teacher.
The Title Teachers Truly Deserve
Perhaps the greatest title for a teacher cannot be shortened to two letters.
It is written in the lives they have touched.
Teacher.
Guru.
Mentor.
Guide.
Nation Builder.
Future Maker.
Whatever title we choose, one thing should never be forgotten:
Teachers don't just teach lessons. They shape minds, build character, inspire dreams, and help shape the future of society.
Every profession may have a title.
But behind every great professional is a teacher who helped shape their journey.
